Overheard

Sophie just came into my office, plopped herself on the big chair, and started the following conversation.

SOPHIE: Dad, the thing is, I'm worried Christmas is not going to start.
ME: Why are you worried about that?
SOPHIE: Because Christmas is not going to start.
ME: Why not?
SOPHIE: Because Santa died.
ME: What??
SOPHIE: Santas can die you know.
ME: How do you know Santa died?
SOPHIE: Because I dinnit see him.
ME: At Christmas time?
SOPHIE: Uh huh.

And then she changed the subject.

I should have you talk to our neighbors. Every year they get Santa and an elf to come to their home and place the presents while all of the children and adults spy. After one performance, we opted out. My hubby is a therapist, and felt some conflict. 14-15 year olds who swear by Santa's existence is a bit contradictory to his practice. They finally made a rule to let the kids in on it just before they entered Jr. High. So-phunnie!

How sad for her to think Santa died. Tell her Grammy still believes in Santa even though she doesn't see him every Christmas. Later she will understand what the meanning of Santa is and it is just the spirit of giving and loving. Of course she will already know the real meaning of Christmas. She is toooooo cute!!!
